Who is your automative hero? For this excercise Im not including anybody that is directly engaged in racing/motorsport. Im going with the Boss because damn good driving songs.

I would have to go with John Fitch. Pilot, racing driver, inventor. triple crown of cool.

Corporate DRM is stupid, but here's a few videos and images to explain:
I could be wrong, but this movie was the inspiration for the Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Dash (as a form of automotive protest) that ultimately resulted in the Gumball Movie, both Cannonball Run movies, and now the modern annual Gumball 3000 race.
If we're including REAL people, it would be Paul Newman:
The reasons are obvious.

< My Reaction
It is going to be boring and quiet at times, but it's an existential movie. If you liked 2001: A Space Odyssey, you'll love this film. To date, it's the only "car" film that puts why we drive on a higher pedestal than what we drive. It's one of those films that isn't very good if you "just watch it" but is amazing if you " really watch it". It's extremely subtle.
So find some time, alone, quiet, with a strong cup of tea or coffee, turn the lights down low, and just experience it, and pay close attention, and it will all make sense.

(pays close attention, becomes intrigued)
(decides to add this movie to watch list based on GhostZ's eloquent recommendation)

Maybe too obvious, but Steve McQueen?

It's a film you have to think about at the end. It is not Gone in 60 seconds, Cannonball run, or fast and the furious.

Gonna have to go with Gordon Murray. Engineer and designer of Formula 1 cars, the McLaren F1 and now doing his own thing at his own company.

Nope. Brock Yates created the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash as a tribute to Erwin George "Cannon Ball" Baker, and as a protest of the national 55 mph speed limits on the highways, and had nothing to do with Vanishing Point.
Find a copy of "Cannonball! America's Greatest Outlaw Road Race" by Brock Yates, it's a great book that goes into great detail about all the Cannonball races.
